James and Lydia’s Hillstone Wedding
There’s something special about a Hillstone Wedding. Even after all these years, I still get excited every time I drive up the driveway.
James and Lydia’s wedding at Hillstone in St Lucia, Brisbane, had a little bit of everything. The day began with rain and grey skies. At one point, it looked like the weather might have other plans. Then, almost as if someone had flicked a switch, the clouds parted and the most beautiful afternoon appeared. From that moment on, everything just seemed to fall perfectly into place, and what a couple these two were.
That Happiest Bride
To say Lydia was happy on her wedding day would be an understatement. She was absolutely glowing from start to finish. Lydia was the happiest bride in the world on that day, and all that joy was contagious. Everywhere she went, people smiled. Her kind of energy changes a wedding. It fills every photograph with life.
What struck me most, though, was just how deeply in love James and Lydia are. You could see it in the way they looked at one another. It wasn’t performative… it was quiet, genuine and overflowing with gratitude. Their collection is such a beautiful example of what gratitude looks like in a picture.
Honestly, it was hard to stay grounded and focused while surrounded by so much love.
There were moments at the Hillstone wedding when I wanted to dance around like an excited child. If I’d smiled as much as I actually felt like smiling, I probably would’ve looked like a complete idiot. But seeing two people so obviously in love and so genuinely grateful to have found one another made me incredibly happy. It’s one of those rare weddings that fills your own heart while you’re documenting it.
The Team
The incredible team at Hillstone deserves so much credit. The staff made everyone feel welcome and completely at ease. Guests were relaxed, the atmosphere was warm, and those cannolis were an absolute hit. Happy people make beautiful photographs, and Hillstone consistently delivers that feeling.
Led by the wonderful celebrant, Danielle Punter, the ceremony was heartfelt and full of personality. She has such a natural way of bringing people together, and it was easy to see why everyone adored her.
Lydia looked absolutely stunning. Her hair was styled by Patrice McNee, while Helena Chapman created a flawless look. They’re both among the finest artists in Brisbane and have an incredible ability to enhance beauty while keeping everything elegant and timeless.
The reception took place in the Rosewood Room, which remains one of my favourite spaces to photograph. It’s bright, airy and filled with beautiful reflections. Light seems to dance around that room. There’s also a sentimental reason why I love a Hillstone wedding so much. Back in 2014, it was the very first reception room I photographed at Hillstone, and every time I walk into it, I’m reminded just how lucky I am to do what I do.
Those stunning flowers were by Gloriosa Florals and the cake was created by the very talented, Annie from Annie Loves Cake.
Trend WatcH
One little trend I’ve noticed recently? Gloves are definitely back. Lydia became the third bride in the past two months to wear them, and I think it’s safe to say they’re making a stylish comeback.
In Memory of Bob
I’d also be remiss if I didn’t mention Bob, Lydia’s grandfather. He sadly passed away just days after the wedding. Thankfully he was able to share in such a beautiful celebration surrounded by the people he loved most. He was so happy to be there.
Such a Privilege
